Office of Assessment Mission:
The Office of Assessment seeks to ensure that CSN accomplishes mission fulfillment by documenting achievement of (a) strategic plan core theme indicators, (b) institutional effectiveness, (c) student learning and success, and (d) evidence-based actions for improvement by:
- leading, supporting, and coordinating planning, assessment and evaluation, and improvement efforts at the campus, unit, and program levels; and
- reporting to internal and external stakeholders on student learning outcomes achievement, goal performance indicators, and program effectiveness at the campus, unit, and program levels.
To accomplish this mission, the office has implemented a six step cycle of assessment and improvement across the institution for all programs, units, and services.
Institutional Assessment and Improvement Goal: Facilitate the highest quality of assessment practices across CSN to assure success in student learning, achievement of core theme indicators, and mission fulfillment.
All CSN campuses, units, services, and programs contribute to institutional effectiveness by participating in a regular system of assessment planning and reporting of data collected through direct and indirect measures of student learning, performance activities, or service delivery. CSN uses a regular assessment system to collect, analyze, and evaluate data for achievement of outcomes, program goals, core themes, and activities. Documented evidence is used for decision-making in planning and budget request processes. The assessment system is divided into four data collection units: Academic Affairs Units, Academic Support Units, Student Affairs Units, and Administrative Services Units. Each unit provides evidence supporting achievement of core theme objectives and CSN Mission fulfillment. CSN units are encouraged to align their assessment processes with two core guiding structures for outcome development in higher education: the four essential learning outcomes of the American Association of Colleges and Universities Liberal Arts for America's Promise (LEAP) Initiative, and six standards and learning outcome domains of the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) in Higher Education.
CSN participates in an integrated strategic planning system where all academic and non-academic strategic plan goals align with the CSN strategic plan and assessment evidence is used to inform decision-making, improvement actions, resource allocation, and determine mission fulfillment.
For 2018-2019 annual reporting of academic program learning outcomes will be transitioned to an electronic data entry system, Watermark Taskstream. Training of data entry in the new system will be offered the first two weeks of September.
The Office of Assessment will be pilot testing Watermark Aqua data collection system for General Education related instruction courses for certificates of achievement. The project will commence in October 2019 to peer evaluate student artifacts for the following Communications related instruction outcomes:
Exhibit change in attitudes, values, beliefs, or behaviors through oral expression
Express ideas in writing across various genres and styles
Use different writing technologies
